The days of the boss dictating which smartphone you'll use are rapidly drawing to a close. A younger, tech-savvy generation of information workers is calling the shots, and it's increasingly requesting consumer-friendly Android and iOS (iPhone) devices, according to a new report from market researcher Forrester.

Is Android worth $10 billion per year to Google or zero? Schmidt and Ballmer disagree.
Will Android be a spectacular revenue-generator for Google, or a spectacular failure? If you believe Google CEO Eric Schmidt, the company will eventually get $10 billion per year from the operating system. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, on the other hand, has long contended that Android is an operating system without a business model. Who's right?
Research In Motion (NSDQ:RIMM) is expected to deliver a new BlackBerry Tuesday, and the pressure to deliver a first class device has never been greater for RIM.
Both Apple (NSDQ:AAPL)'s iPhone and smartphones running Google Android have made big gains against RIM in the past year -- Android grew as much as 886 percent in year-over-year shipments -- and although RIM still commands the leading market share among smartphone makers in the U.S., its position is challenged by a glut of faster, friendlier, feature-packed smartphones.

$35 Tablet PC Has More Ffeatures Than the iPad
It's not as pretty and it's not as powerful, but a new $35 tablet computer from India comes with some basic features that the iPad doesn't. Apple's trendy touchscreen device, starting at about $630, requires users to fork out for extra accessories if they want to connect a digital camera or output video.

With Droid 2, Adobe Flash Stakes its Claim.
Adobe is latching on to the launch of Motorola's Droid 2, reminding the world that Flash 10.1 is here to make the iPhone look silly. A video on Adobe's Website shows Flash in action on the Droid 2. The phone handles web video from sites like CBS along with interactivity within the video, such as buttons for sharing with social networks. Interactive content, such as The Sims' mobile Website, also seems to work well.

Motorola developing Android tablet for Verizon that includes TV support for FiOS customers
With Research in Motion preparing a tablet to compete against the iPad, it shouldn’t be any surprise that Motorola is working on one, too. But while RIM’s BlackPad seems geared for enterprise customers, Motorola seems to have its sight set on consumers — especially those who are Verizon FiOS subscribers.
Android Sales Overtake iPhone in the U.S.
Sales of Google Android phones in the U.S. are rising so quickly, the devices have outsold Apple handsets for the first time on record. New smartphone subscribers choosing Google phones accounted for 27 percent of U.S. smartphone sales, the Nielsen Company will announce this morning, nudging past the 23 percent share held by Apple. But Android isn’t just a U.S. phenomenon: Canalys today estimates that Android handset sales grew 886 percent worldwide from the year ago quarter.
An EVO 4G Salesman Confronts An iPhone 4 Shopper (NSFW language with less profanity)
If you live in the Silicon Valley echo chamber, nothing has been hotter lately than the Android/iPhone smackdown.
It’s been an amazing year so far for Apple. It introduced the iPad and a new iPhone, and the company can’t make either device fast enough to satisfy demand. It’s been an equally impressive year for Google’s Android, however. Last week Google reported that Android was in 40 countries and on 40 carriers. It said the Android App store now had in excess of 75,000 offerings, and it repeated an astonishing statistic first offered up in June: 160,000 Android smartphones were being activated each day.
Augen brings its $150 Gentouch78 Android tablet to Kmart
Little-known device manufacturer Augen unveiled its 7-inch Gentouch78 Android tablet in the unlikeliest of places this weekend: Kmart’s Sunday flyer.
The tablet will retail for $149.99 (that’s a special sale price; it will eventually move to a standard $169.99), and will feature Android 2.1, WiFi, 256 MB of RAM, and 2GB of storage. The device will also have access to the Android app marketplace. It may not be much of an iPad competitor when it comes to specifications, but its price makes it a tempting tablet for many shoppers. Kmart is apparently having trouble getting the device to its stores, but in a blog post the retailer says customers will be able to get a raincheck to secure the killer sale price.
Will Google's DIY Apps Boost the Lagging Android Market?
Have you ever had a great idea for a smartphone application, but lacked the technical know-how to create it? Then you might you want to check out App Inventor beta, Google's new Web-based Android app-making tool that lets anyone build a smartphone application with no programming knowledge required.
Instead of entering lines of code, App Inventor allows you to build an entire application by dragging and dropping items like buttons, text entry boxes, and images onto the application builder. App Inventor also gives you access to a variety of phone features you can include in your app such as GPS, accelerometers, and integration with Web-based services such as Twitter.
Google's master Android plan: We're all mobile app developers now
Google has launched an effort to make everyone an Android software developer. The search giant is hellbent on growing its app inventory and the Android marketplace and has the momentum and open approach to just give Apple a run.
Now Google is offering a do-it-yourself mobile app tool. The tool, which is available now in Google Labs, is called App Inventor.
First front facing QWERTY Android device coming to T-Mobile, Motorola Charm
We heard some recent rumors of a QWERTY Android device coming soon to T-Mobile the past few weeks and I just read over on PhoneScoop that Motorola announced the Motorola Charm for T-Mobile USA.
You may recall I ordered an Agora Pro back in late 2008 that was supposed to be the first front facing QWERTY Android device, but that device turned out to be vaporware and my money was refunded.
Nokia N900 Hacked to Run Android 2.2 Froyo
We all know that the Nokia N900 packs in some potent hardware in that tiny frame. The phone, even though a generation old, is a powerhouse, thanks to the 600Mhz ARM Cortex A8 inside. Also, due to its OS being the Linux based Maemo, it is relatively easier to port another Linux based OS on the N900, rather than say doing so on a Symbian based handset.
Will iPhone 4's woes help Android?
The iPhone 4's reported problems may scare prospective iPhone buyers over to Android. Steve Jobs shows off new iPhone 4 antenna design via intomobile.com
As my colleague, Phillip Elmer-DeWitt reported this weekend, the iPhone 4 has a significant issue that might be able to be fixed with a software update, it might not. We'll see.

Motorola Droid X Review: Bigger, Badder, Better
The Motorola Droid X is the fourth “Droid” branded phone on Verizon Wireless, and Motorola’s eleventh (!) Google Android-based smartphone.
The device has big shoes to fill: with an esteemed lineage that includes the original Motorola Droid (then the “best Android smartphone to date”) and the HTC Droid Incredible (again, then the “best Android smartphone to date”), the Droid X carries a moniker that has, in just two years’ time, come to indicate the best and most powerful of smartphones.

Google music service will be boon to Android users
For the past few months I’ve been on the search for a quality subscription music service. I like Napster because they offer you purchase credits along with your subscription price. Rhapsody looks good, and they have an Android app, but I can’t load those songs onto my older generation iPod. Every service, it seems, has a downside that makes it not worth it for someone like me, who enjoys his music on different devices. Thankfully, Google might soon supply the answer.

Now, the world can begin to experience firsthand whether Flash delivers as expected on smartphones, or if Steve Jobs made the right move in turning his back on the platform.

Android 2.2 lays down the gauntlet, includes WiFi tethering
So the iPhone might finally get USB and Bluetooth tethering next month, huh? Well it may turn out to be too little and too late.
At its IO Conference today in San Francisco, Google announced Android 2.2 (code named “Froyo”), and as expected, the new version of its mobile OS includes Wi-Fi tethering — something previously available only on PalmOS phones (like the Pre+) and on rooted Android devices. They even demo’d a Wi-Fi iPad connected to it.
Google Tablet the First Look At Google's 'iPad Killer'
Since the iPad was unveiled, the Kindle has been most frequently cited as the closest competitor to the Apple Tablet. But Google, which Steve Jobs reportedly accused of wanting to 'kill us,' seems to be hard at work on its own 'iPad-killer.'
Gadgets Hacker Brings Android to the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS Up Next
Apple surely isn't happy about this - Much like the open platform Windows invaded the traditionally closed hardware platform of Apple's Macs -- first unofficially, and then later officially condoned -- Android is now establishing a beach head on Apple's coveted iPhone.
Watch Out iPhone, Android Use Is on the Rise
Watch out Apple iPhone, Google's mobile operating system, Android continues to increase its popularity at a growth rate of 32 percent year over year, according to a recent report. Mobile advertising provider and metrics firm AdMob, recently acquired by Google for $750 million , released on Tuesday its March 2010 Mobile Metrics Report that includes some interesting data about the growth of the Android operating system. The report also adds more fuel to the argument that Google's Nexus One really might be a successful flop .
Google Android phone on Telstra
I have a new Google Android HTC Magic mobile phone working on the Telstra network.
Telstra is not expected to offer the phone until later this year, and even then it will probably be an expensive purchase on a plan.
I acquired mine from Hong Kong via eBay for $650 including postage. It was “unlocked” which means you can insert a SIM card from any service provider and it should work.
The phone itself is a beautiful unit: slim, sleek, light and packed with features. Full details are here on the HTC website.
Compared to my former JasJam (which also cost $650 in November 2007), it’s much lighter, faster, installs applications more easily and has a longer battery life.
Hit By Apple HTC Now Has Problems With HD2 Phone
By David Richards & Computer Daily News | Wednesday | 03/03/2010
Taiwanese phone maker HTC has found itself under pressure on two fronts after Apple said that it is set to sue HTC for infringing on 20 patents related to its popular iPhone, which are being infringed in the new Nexus One Google Android mobile phone as well as several other phones.
In Australia, customers who purchase the new HTC HD2, which runs on the Windows Mobile operating system, face the prospect of not being able to upgrade their new phone to the new Windows 7 OS, which is due out later this year.
Telstra is currently selling the HD2 exclusively on its Next G network, for A$0 upfront with a 24-month $80 plan. The new Windows OS is due out in September 2010.

Android Market Now Accepting Priced Applications
Looks like the Wall Street Journal got it right. The Android Market is now accepting priced applications with availability starting next week.
According to the official Android Developers Blog, Google Checkout will act as the payment and billing mechanism for Android Market. Can't really say that's a surprise there. It will be interesting to see how many people are even set up with a Google Checkout account to make purchases. These next few weeks could be very telling in how viable the Market becomes.
